Repair or Replace? How to Know When Your Furnace Has Reached the Point of No Return
Repair vs ReplaceJuly 15, 2026
It is one of the most common questions Winnipeg homeowners ask when their furnace starts having problems.
"Should I repair it or just replace it?"
The honest answer depends on a few specific factors — and getting it right can save you thousands of dollars. Getting it wrong can cost you just as much.
Here is how to think through the repair-or-replace decision the way a professional would.
The Age Rule
The first thing any honest HVAC technician will tell you is that furnace age matters more than almost anything else in this decision.
If your furnace is under 10 years old and has been reasonably maintained, repair almost always makes sense — assuming the repair cost is not unusually high.
If your furnace is between 10 and 15 years old, it depends on what needs fixing and what the repair costs.
If your furnace is over 15 years old, replacement is almost always the smarter financial decision — even when the repair itself seems minor. You are not just paying to fix the current problem. You are paying to keep an aging system alive for one more season before the next problem arrives.
The 50 Percent Rule
Here is a simple guideline that most HVAC professionals use.
If the cost of the repair is more than 50 percent of the cost of a new furnace — and your furnace is more than 10 years old — replacement is almost always the better choice.
Example: if a new furnace costs three thousand dollars and your repair estimate is eighteen hundred dollars for a furnace that is 14 years old, the math strongly favours replacement.
What the Repair Will Not Fix
This is the question most homeowners forget to ask.
Even after the repair, your furnace will still be the same age. It will still have the same worn components. It will still have the same efficiency rating — which is almost certainly lower than a modern furnace would be.
A repair fixes the specific problem in front of you. It does not address the other components that are equally worn and equally likely to fail.
Replacement gives you a new system, a manufacturer warranty, modern efficiency, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing your heat source is not held together by a recent repair job.
When Repair Clearly Makes Sense
Your furnace is less than 10 years old.
The repair cost is modest relative to the remaining value of the system.
This is the first significant repair the furnace has needed.
The repair addresses a specific, isolated component rather than a systemic issue.
When Replacement Clearly Makes Sense
Your furnace is 15 or more years old.
This is the second or third repair in a short window.
The repair cost is more than half the cost of a new furnace.
Your energy bills have been climbing despite no change in habits.
The technician has identified other components that are also wearing out.
